A recent study suggests that being overweight or obese may increase risk of contralateral breast cancer in breast cancer survivors. Early studies have linked excess body weight with increased risk of the disease and breast cancer survivors are are increased risk of second cancers.

For all the talk of an obesity “epidemic,” obesity rates in the United States no longer are rising, but have remained constant during the last five years for men, and for nearly 10 years for women and children, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Perhaps the most erroneous notion among adipose alarmists is that regulation will remedy the problem.

In reality, government has been a major cause of the country’s bigger caloric footprint. Researchers have documented higher rates of obesity among recipients of food stamps, even after controlling for socioeconomic status. And the longer recipients remained in the program, the heavier they became.

Lobster tails, food stamps and obesity

Nutritionally speaking, enrollees in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program would be better off buying more lobster and prime-cut beef than what they’re spending most of their money on. It wouldn’t be financially responsible, of course — not for them, on their limited monthly allowances, and not for the taxpayers who keep the food-stamp program running. But in terms of nutrition, there’s no doubt.
