Doctors have long told patients fighting obesity to eat their fruits and vegetables. Now they’re writing prescriptions for it.

Health care providers are offering vouchers worth $1 per day to members of low-income families in Massachusetts and Maine participating in a new program. The idea is to boost consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables by providing one serving a day from local farmers.

While some research suggests that the incidence of childhood obesity may be leveling off, a new study finds that for certain racial groups the rates may actually be getting higher.

The study, to be published in the September issue of Pediatrics, finds that black, Hispanic and American Indian girls have two to three times higher odds of having a high body-mass index (BMI) compared to white girls.

“Active cities” may help reduce obesity rate: study

LOS ANGELES — U.S. researchers have found that residents who live in cities with more sidewalks and bike paths tend to be slimmer.

To determine how “active cities” influence the obesity rate, researchers at University of Tennessee (UT) analyzed data from all 50 U.S. states and 47 of the 50 largest U.S. cities, along with international data from 14 countries.

RSL, Morales partner with schools to fight childhood obesity

Starting today, all 16 clubs across Major League Soccer are asking fans to join them in making a difference in America’s communities.

As part of the Pepsi Refresh Project, each Club has outlined an idea — such as Real Salt Lake midfielder Javier Morales’ partnership with local schools to champion programs in the fight against childhood obesity — that will vie for fan votes and an ultimate $50,000 Pepsi Refresh grant to fulfill the project.
